We've almost missed this. It's not Mobile World Congress related, but it's important nonetheless. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced that their Nokia Music Store is now available to the people of Austria and Switzerland. As usual, aside from offering music from the major labels, the Finnish giant also made sure local artists are in the database, as well. Individual tracks cost 1 EUR/1.5 CHF, while whole albums can be purchased for 10 EUR/15 CHF. In related news, just as we expected, Nokia is bringing its Comes With Music initiative to Singapore. A whole range of devices bundled with the "unlimited music downloads for a year" service will be offered. Among the phones that will participate in the program are the Nokia N96, Nokia N85 and Nokia N79, as well as the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic and 5220 XpressMusic devices. In addition, consumers in Singapore will be the first in the world to get their hands on a Comes With Music-enabled Nokia 5800 XpressMusic when it hits the stores. Related News from IntoMobile:

TI unveils new DLP Pico projector technology chip Posted: 16 Feb 2009 02:48 AM PST Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) announced the new DLP Pico projector chipset, designed to be used in mobile phones and other gadgets. Among the notable features are support for WVGA resolution, more then 20% thinner optical module height and more than 20% smaller optical module volume. In addition, the new member to the DLP Pico projector family is both more power efficient and has increased brightness, as well as the contrast ratio of better than 1000:1. The bad thing, though, is that these chipsets have availability slated for late 2009. In other words, don't expect to see any handsets using the new DLP technology this year… Full release follows after the jump. PRESS RELEASE - Today at GSMA Mobile World Congress, Texas Instruments (TI) DLP Products announced the newest chipset in the DLP Pico family with availability slated for late 2009. Small enough to embed into the most compact mobile phones and gadgets, DLP Products has effectively scaled the display technology down to the size of a raisin without compromising superior picture quality and screen size. Designed in response to demand from mobile device manufacturers, the new chip demonstrates DLP's continued leadership in the pico projector category. This announcement comes on the heals of, the first DLP Pico chipset being named a finalist in the Global Mobile Awards for Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough awarded by the GSMA. "Building upon the success of the first DLP Pico chipset, which has HVGA resolution and enables leading brands to deliver cutting-edge products across the globe, this new chipset increases performance benchmarks," said Frank J. Moizio, Manager, DLP Emerging Markets business. "The new chipset provides WVGA resolution, higher brightness and power efficiency; all while enabling thinner, smaller optical engine modules to meet the demands of contemporary handheld devices." DLP Pico projection products were featured at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January and regarded by industry analysts as one of the hottest new categories in consumer electronics. According to U.S. based research group Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the market for such devices is expected to surpass millions of units in the next few years. First introduced at Mobile World Congress last year, several global partners have already launched products built on DLP Pico technology ranging from notebook companions to handheld media players and mobile phones. The newest DLP Pico chipset can be paired with a TI OMAP application processor to deliver the ultimate mobile user experience. The DLP Pico chipset is a combination of the DLP Pico chip and the DLP Pico processor. It is optimized for applications in mobile and handheld devices. Nokia N96 is in da house; First impressions are here Posted: 15 Feb 2009 04:11 PM PST Nokia (NYSE: NOK)'s WOM World was kind enough to lend me the Nokia N96 so I could carry it with myself to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The device is super slick and looks much, much better than its predecessor, Nokia N95 8GB (if that is its predecessor at all). It fits in the hand nicely and it's quite responsive. I must add here that I still have to install some apps on it and then to evaluate its speed, but if its working like the E71, it shouldn't be a problem. Even though it's a media centric device, I miss the full QWERTY keyboard. That being said, I can't hide my enthusiasm for the Nokia N97, the first QWERTY keyboard equipped NSeries device. Back to the N96. As I said, it's supper slick and its large screen rocks. Too bad it's only QVGA, as there's certainly room for higher resolution. HTC Touch Diamond has a VGA resolution on the same-sized screen (2.8-inches). Anyhow, the idea is not to compare it with the Diamond as it's a different kind of device, which was released after the N96. Rather, I'll try to write my daily endeavors with it. In that sense it will be much like my "A week with the Nokia E71″ series. This time the main role goes to the N96. Finally, before I let you go - if you have any questions about the device, don't hesitate to drop them in the comments form. I'll try to address all of them. Thanks! Related News from IntoMobile:

The Oregon Trail coming to an iPhone/iPod Touch near you Posted: 15 Feb 2009 04:07 PM PST Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) II classic, The Oregon Trail, is set to hit the AppStore. So far, we've seen the popular game being released for the JavaME-enabled mobile phones and now Gameloft is planning to bring the legendary title to the iPhone, as well. The story line remains the same and sees you following the trials and tribulations of the pioneer's life on the wagon as they make the journey from Independence, Missouri, to Willamette Valley in Oregon in 1848. I'll stop here - you can get more information about the game from a dedicated Wikipedia entry. Now the bad news. Apparently this will be an U.S. title only. Europeans will not get to play it, at least for now. Hopefully that will change and as soon as The Oregon Trail hits the American AppStore, Europeans will get to try it out within weeks… [Via: PocketGamer.co.uk] Related News from IntoMobile:

Sony Ericsson unveils 12MP touchscreen "Idou" at Mobile World Congress! Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:56 PM PST Mobile World Congress is definitely the right place to launch a new high-end touchscreen handset, and Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) knows how to play this game to a "t." We hit the Opium Cinema in Barcelona, home of the Mobile World Congress 2009, thinking we were going to put hands on some of Sony Ericsson's new handsets. Little did we know that Sony Ericsson was going to announce a brand new Symbian-powered touchscreen handset with a 12-megapixel camera! Introducing the Symbian-powered Sony Ericsson "Idou" (rhymes with "doodoo"). So new it doesn't even have an official model name, the Sony Ericsson Idou spec-sheet includes class-leading features like a 12-megapixel camera (no CyberShot) with Xenon flash, 3.5-inch widescreen touchscreen display, and DLNA-compatible WiFi and GPS receivers. And, to top it all off, the Sony Ericsson Idou is powered by what will be known as the Symbian Foundation OS - based on the Symbian platform and Nokia (NYSE: NOK)'s Symbian S60 UI and should make for a user experience not too unlike the current S60 5th Edition OS. Not much else is known about the Sony Ericsson Idou at this point. Thanks to our friends at Mobile Burn, we can tell you that it feels downright solid in the hand - which makes sense for a high-end cameraphone from Sony Ericsson. Generous use of brushed metal hammers home the Sony Ericsson Idou's place as a class-leader, not just in the feature-set, but also in aesthetics. Really, it's a pretty looking piece of kit. Full details and availability/pricing information is expected to go public around Summer of 2009, so don't go expecting to see this 12-megapixel monster of a cameraphone hitting market before end-of-2009, if that. ABI Research: WiFi-enabled handset shipments to double from 2008 through 2010 Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:56 PM PST Shipments of WiFi-enabled mobile phones will double in volume by the end of 2010, compared to January 2008, and that growth curve is expected to continue through 2013, according to ABI Research. This data clearly shows WiFi technology will continue to penetrate deeper into mobile handsets over the next five years due such factors as increased consumer awareness and demand, new operator business models, and increased value for mobile phone makers. While Nokia (NYSE: NOK) leads the market in WiFi-enabled handsets due to the sheer volume of its portfolio, WiFi models only represent a small fraction of the range. In contrast, every Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone has WiFi and due to its ease of use, more iPhone users ― as many as 75% ― are using their Wi-Fi regularly. Contrasting again, HTC's handset lineup is 80% WiFi-equipped, but only 10% of its users are employing the WiFi capability. However, industry analyst Michael Morgan says there few challenges to WiFi's continued growth. "One obstacle is the glacial pace of IEEE standardization in the areas that address voice over WiFi usage. Another is the growing carrier interest in femtocells. While they have their problems, femtocells do provide an alternative to improving in-building coverage without the need for WiFi capable handsets. Although Wi-Fi access points are already installed in many homes and business, the carriers may ultimately push to have femtocells installed at these key locations," he added. In WiFi's favor are the facts that as flat rate data plans increase, carriers can leverage WiFi capable handsets to offload data intensive applications, improve in-building coverage, and offer new services to new markets. As usual, more information about ABI Research's study titled "Wi-Fi Capable Handsets" is available from their website. Related News from IntoMobile:

Sierra Wireless introduces AirLink Helix line of integrated 3G wireless routers Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:39 PM PST Sierra Wireless introduced the new AirLink Helix line of integrated 3G wireless routers. The first router will come with two Ethernet ports, two USB ports, and an optional 802.11 b/g access point. Helix routers provide a configurable WAN/LAN Ethernet port option and a built-in connection failover feature to ensure business continuity. Sensing when the primary connection fails, the router automatically switches to the 3G wireless network. The router then continuously monitors wireline network availability and automatically reverts back to the primary connection when service is restored. As a result, the routers are perfect to provide mobile hotspot access for public transportation vehicles, which is kinda cool. Specs wise, Helix routers offer a fully IPSec compliant VPN for data security, dual diversity 3G antenna ports, and an optional 802.11b/g WiFi access point with WPA and WPA2 encryption. No exact release date is known at this stage. All we know is that Sierra will start selling Helix routers "later this year," offering a choice of HSPA or EV-DO Rev A network technologies. ABI Research: Push-to-Talk to reach 8.5% penetration in North America by 2013; What about the rest of the world? Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:36 PM PST Push to Talk (PTT), the feature that enables users to connect virtually instantaneously with other users, is forecast to find its way into 8.5% of the North American market by the end of 2013. But in no other world region will it even begin to approach that market share. According to ABI Research senior analyst Mark Beccue, the problem is that non-U.S. operators haven't figured the right way to promote the service. Mark argues that PTT is essentially a business application and when used in vertical businesses, it makes perfect sense. "Its best-known exponent, Nextel (now Sprint (NYSE: S)-Nextel) proved that with its subscriber numbers. But strangely, in other world regions MNOs have failed to market PTT successfully to business users or have opted to market to consumers, and it just hasn't taken off," he added. There's an interesting new technology out there called PTX, designed to make push-to-talk work for the consumers, which extends the PTT principle to include multimedia content. ABI continues saying there are some steps operators can take to help unlock the PTT market. Steering away from PTT-specific handsets is one. Another more risky move would be to migrate to an open model allowing PTT usage cross carriers via downloadable and clientless applications. Speaking about the open model, some vendors are already addressing this: in the UK, Push to Talk Ltd offers downloadable client software which, along with a monthly fee, allows users to do cross-network PTT. And Kodiak Networks offers downloadable and preloadable PTT applications that reduce the need for users to have PTT-capable handsets. These and other PTT market questions are addressed in ABI Research's new Research Brief called "Push To Talk Services". You can get more information about it from their website. Telmap brings its offering to MIDs Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:31 PM PST Even though we still wait to see an uptake in Mobile Internet Devices (MID) adoption, that doesn't stop Telmap to bring its location-aware software to the platform based on the Intel Atom processor and Linux-based Moblin. Guess the idea here is to "go multi-platform" no matter what. This is not to say I'm against MIDs ― quite the contrary, I just don't see a significant market opportunity at this point. Anyhow, if and when "MID revolution" happens, Telmap will be there to offer MID owners its comprehensive navigation solution, which BTW is already used by such companies as Orange, FT Group, Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), SFR, The Carphone Warehouse, O2 (NYSE: TEF), Sprint (NYSE: S), AT&T (NYSE: T) and Vodacom. In the meantime, if you want to see "Telmap in the MIDdle of the action," they will be demonstrating software at their stand #1E02 in Hall 1 and at the Intel stand #8B109 in Hall 8 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. WiMAX Forum: Over 800 million people will have access to WiMAX networks by 2010 Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:20 PM PST Just in time for the Mobile World Congress, the WiMAX Forum announced that WiMAX Service Providers now offer networks covering 430 million people (aka POPS) globally and are on a path to nearly double to 800 million people by the end of 2010. In addition, global WiMAX network deployments are approaching 460 in more than 135 countries for fixed, portable, and mobile networks. One of the important sources of growth for the further WiMAX network deployments are the new spectrum licenses anticipated to be allocated in countries such as Brazil and India. Additionally, the ecosystem can expect to see continued subscriber growth as consumers and enterprises recognize the availability of WiMAX as a high-speed low-cost alternative to other Internet technologies. According to Intel's Sean Maloney, after several years in development, 2008 was the year that WiMAX became a global reality. "In both emerging markets and mature countries, companies and governments are deploying 4G WiMAX networks to help bridge the digital divide and bring affordable, super-fast mobile broadband to their citizens. As countries look to accelerate broadband in 2009 to address economic recovery, WiMAX is ready - it's the right technology at the right time. There is no need to wait - WiMAX is a reality today," he concluded. In related news, the WiMAX Forum announced that Samsung's U-RAS Flexible and ZTE's 9100+R9100 base stations received the WiMAX Forum Certified seal of approval for products for the 3.5 GHz spectrum band… Related News from IntoMobile:

The new capability, available as a white label solution, enables carriers and other interested parties to launch the service under their own brand and provide their customers with the ability to make low-cost phone calls and send text messages to any phone in the world from their iPod Touch. Naturally a microphone headset (available from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)) and working WiFi connection are also required so that iPod Touch can be used for calling/text messaging and connecting to JAJAH's servers. ABI Research: Half a billion mobile TV viewers and subscribers in 2013 Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:12 PM PST According to ABI research, the approaching switchover to all-digital TV broadcasting in major countries will create an unprecedented opportunity for the mobile TV market. Although mobile TV was pioneered in Japan and South Korea, following the switchover traditional and mobile TV broadcasters and carriers in many regions will launch mobile TV services that are set to attract over 500 million viewers by 2013. ABI Research's senior analyst Jeff Orr argues that mobile TV viewing will not solely be on mobile phones, but also on MIDs and automotive infotainment systems. "I believe that once the content is available and the services launched, mobile TV will enable more classes of mobile devices that are 'natural fits' for mobile entertainment," he added. Apparently mobile TV adoption will bring benefits to all the parties involved ― including content developers and providers; device vendors, especially MID and handset OEMs; and service providers. In addition, multimedia and security software, semiconductor and network infrastructure vendors are also expected to gain from mobile TV. ABI Research believes the timing of the market's emergence is good. As 2009 progresses, signs of economic recovery may emerge, and allow the fledgling industry to establish a foothold before the holiday shopping season… More information about ABI Research's study "The Mobile TV Market" is available from their website. Paramount and Freeverse bring Days of Thunder to AppStore Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:08 PM PST Earning an additional buck or two on the existing franchise is always a good business. Paramount knows that, hence they've partnered with Freeverse to bring the mobile game based on their once popular movie, Days of Thunder, to the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone. The good thing about this title is that it's quite affordable, costing only a buck (for the opening weekend, at least). That, however, doesn't mean it sucks. Quite the contrary or at least I may not be an expert for racing games. From what I can tell, Days of Thunder looks quite decent, allowing you to control the car by moving your iPhone/iPod Touch around, thanks to the built-in accelerometer. There are 14 race cars to win/buy and 39 races, covering 12 unique tracks in six different circuits: Amateur, Qualifying, Semi-Pro, Pro, Superstar, and Endurance. As you progress through the Story Mode and earn achievements, you can unlock new tracks. In addition, five original music tracks are there to "enhance the action-packed gameplay." Wanna try it? iSkin Shows Off Bluetooth iPhone Dock Adapter at MWC Posted: 15 Feb 2009 03:02 PM PST iSkin, the guys who put out those iPhone cases a few weeks ago, were showing off a very cool Bluetooth adapter for iPod and iPhone docks at Mobile World Congress. This allows Stereo Bluetooth-capable handsets to stream music to iPhone docks - not entirely dissimilar to the BlackBerry Bluetooth Stereo Gateway. Pricetag for the iSkin Cerulean FX is going to be in the $70 range, and unlike the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) version, will work with any handsets supporting A2DP. A very cool little toy, and a great choice for anyone kicking their iPhone to the curb, but still have an expensive docking station that deserves some use. Related News from IntoMobile:

Shake or Date game helps iPhone/iPod Touch users handle various dating situations Posted: 15 Feb 2009 02:56 PM PST Shake or Date is relatively new iPhone app that guides you through various dating scenarios to help you make decisions based on what's important to someone you're interested in, based on that person's experience(s) on dates. As a player, you have the power to "shake" or "date" someone. It can be played as a party game (think of it as a high-tech replacement of the good ol' bottle), but also on your own, if you want to play it as a dating simulation. To play the game, a group should gather around an iPod Touch or iPhone, read a dating scenario and see what other players do when faced with some dating situations. The person holding the device can moderate the game. What's interesting about Shake or Date is that it's based on true dating stories collected from dozens of individuals, both men and women, from around the world… Sounds like fun, though I'm not sure it's worth 5 bucks ($4.99). A short video demoing Shake or Date follows after the jump.
