Top Penny Stocks To Buy Right Now

Schemes to defraud the taxman likely sprang to life the second the first penny was collected. But who could have imagined that billions would be paid out every year to those brazen enough to ask the government for refunds they didn’t deserve?

Last year, the IRS mailed out fraudulent refunds worth $3.6 billion. That was at least an improvement over the $5.2 billion doled out in 2012.

Still, it’s hard to fathom how a system could miss the half-million dollars to an address in Bulgaria that was used on 700 income tax returns.

For its part, the IRS said it spotted more than 12 million suspicious returns seeking a total of $40 million. So maybe the batting average isn’t so bad.

Looking at a list of the top tax fraud cases for 2013, it’s not surprising to see that identity theft is a part of many of them. That crime topped the IRS’ 2013 list of top tax scams.

Of course, identity theft isn’t the only way fraudsters try to outfox the government. Last year, even a former big-city mayor was nailed for simply failing to pay all of his taxes.

Another under-$10 stock that's quickly pushing within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Netsol Technologies (NTWK), which designs, develops, markets and exports proprietary software products to customers in the automobile finance and leasing, banking, health care and financial services industries internationally. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up by 28%.

If you take a look at the chart for Netsol Technologies, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last two months, with shares sliding sharply lower from its high of $12.10 to its recent low of $7.03 a share. During that downtrend, shares of NTWK have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of NTWK have started to stabilize and reverse its downtrend, since the stock has started to make higher lows and higher highs over the last few weeks. This move is quickly pushing shares of NTWK within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in NTWK if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $7.74 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 225,909 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then NTWK will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $8.71 to its 50-day moving average at $9.16 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give NTWK a chance to tag its 200-day at $10.20 to more resistance at $10.45 a share.

Traders can look to buy NTWK off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $7.20 or $7.03 a share. One can also buy NTWK off strength once it clears $7.74 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage fr

Advisors' Opinion:

Video game and gaming accessories company GameStop (NYSE: GME  ) seriously needs its own residency among the top performers list, once again taking the lead with a 6.3% gain. The impetus was comments made by Microsoftthat it was going to deviate from its previous stance and drop curbs on reselling, trading, and lending games for its upcoming gaming console, the Xbox One. This is big news for both companies, as GameStop relies heavily on fat used-game profit margins to grow its bottom line, while Microsoft doesn't want to deter gamers from buying its new system, with Sonyalso having no curbs in place on used games and its gaming system coming out with its PlayStation 4 in the latter half of the year.

GameStop (NYSE: GME  ) , short position: 38.1% of float and 37.2% of outstanding shares
GameStop has seen its stock rise sharply recently, hitting five-year highs as bullish investors look forward to a new wave of video game consoles expected to hit the market in the near future. Yet even though new consoles will drive sales for GameStop in the short run, short-sellers are focused on longer-term challenges to the retailer's business model. With increased digital distribution from gamemakers and other measures that make reselling old unwanted games more difficult, GameStop could lose a big portion of its used-game inventory, which is a major profit center for the company.

Sometimes it pays to play. As the broader market was falling on Friday, shares of GameStop (NYSE: GME  ) leapt by more than 4% in intraday trading, to come within spitting distance of a new multi-year high.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Integrated Silicon Solution (Nasdaq: ISSI  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Integrated Silicon Solution doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 7.0%, and inventory increased 43.7%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks potentially problematic. Revenue grew 20.0%, and inventory grew 43.7%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue dropped 1.8%, and inventory dropped 0.8%.

Top Internet Companies To Own In Right Now

There is a looming monumental change in the information technology sector that will obviously benefit some existing producers of technology networking equipment but unfortunately, some will be drowned in the ensuing storm. The size of the networking equipment industry where Cisco Systems (CSCO) currently plays a prominent role is massive: The industry is worth about $50 billion in annual spending. Cisco is a tech manufacturing company that manufactures and markets Internet protocol-based switches and routers commonly used by networking companies and professionals for data and voice transmission across networks. Other major players in this industry include F5 Networks (FFIV), Juniper Networks (JNPR) and Brocade (BRCD).

The Tech Tsunami

The major change coming involves a shift from hardware laden data networking to software-defined networking (SDN). The SDN is a remarkable set of complex processes about how data gets routed across networks. Instead of stringing together several hundreds of servers and applications that makes data centres of this hi-tech age work efficiently, the SDN works by separating the control plane from the data plane so that control is centralized and moves out of the router. What that means is that the era of IP networking where Cisco is king currently will soon give way to the SDN technology. The SDN technology is basically software driven. It is capable of managing and moving data efficiently. So, the question is, does this imply that tough times await Cisco and other major network equipment producers? How much concern should investors show to this looming monumental change?

"Bitcoins" either sound like a futuristic, implantable, laser-guided and rocket-pack equipped form of money, or the latest coin-shaped chocolate snack. In reality, it's probably a bit of both. The bitcoin, a digital currency, started the year worth about $15. Less than four months later, one bitcoin now trades above $70. While this past performance may be enticing and a sign of its legitimacy as a future currency, the bitcoin market is full of risks -- risks that may make bitcoins worth as much as a foil-wrapped piece of sugar. Bitcoin: A Crypto-Currency Bitcoin is based around the idea of a currency created and transacted through cryptography instead of issued and tracked through a central bank. And to add to its mystique, the creator of bitcoin only goes by a pseudonym and has never been positively identified. Instead of any legal authority, bitcoin transactions are verified through peer-to-peer interactions. If a user sends bitcoins to another user's "wallet" file, that transaction is verified through other users, and is written into the collective transaction log. And given the ease of transactions, any fees for transfers are minimal. Instead of a mint, bitcoins are created through a process called "mining," where computers attempt to solve for a certain number, and once found, are rewarded with new bitcoins. The rewards decrease with time, however, and there will only ever be about 21 million bitcoins created, three-quarters of which by 2016, and all by 2140. Even if you don't understand any of the above, the recent jump in valuation probably still has your interest. But there are plenty of reasons to continue to educate yourself before attempting to trade in bitcoins.

Judith Collins/Alamy WASHINGTON - Home improvement retailer Home Depot (HD) has been in contact with the U.S. Secret Service about an alleged major breach of customer and credit card data that came to light this week, a law enforcement source told Reuters on Thursday. Any investigation by the Secret Service appears to be at a very early stage, the source said. The Secret Service, which declined comment, usually is the lead agency in federal criminal investigations into complex breaches of credit card and other consumer data. Another law enforcement source said the FBI, which also sometimes participates in such investigations, doesn't appear to be involved. It is unclear whether the U.S. Department of Justice is playing any role. Customer data could have been stolen from nearly all of Home Depot's 2,200 stores in the United States, according to information released Wednesday by security blog Krebs on Security. Home Depot hasn't confirmed that a breach occurred and it remains unclear whether or how many customers were impacted. If confirmed, the Home Depot incident could be among the most widespread in the string of security breaches at U.S. retailers in the recent past. Spokeswoman Paula Drake said Wednesday that the retailer is working with IT security firms, including Symantec (SYMC) and FishNet Security, to investigate whether there has been a data breach. A Symantec spokeswoman confirmed that Symantec was assisting with the investigation but didn't elaborate. Home Depot sought to comfort its consumers, promising free identity-protection services, including credit monitoring, to any potentially impacted customers and reassuring that the retailer or the banks that issued the cards will be responsible for any fraudulent charges. Home Depot shares were up 1.6 percent at $90.39 Thursday morning on the New York Stock Exchange. CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

TopRank’s Lee Odden Tackles Influencer Marketing in 5 Simple Steps

At the largest content marketing conference in the world, over 2,500 attendees from 50+ countries converged on Cleveland, Ohio this week to learn about all things content marketing. Our agency, TopRank Online Marketing, has been involved with CMWorld since day one: presenting every year for the past 4 years as well as helping to market the conference through influencer eBooks. Saying we’re big fans of the event is an understatement.

As it happens, my first session at Content Marketing World was presented by our CEO, Lee Odden on the topic of influencers and content marketing.

What is an influencer? In a recent interview featured in Ann Handley’s Entrepreneur Magazine column, Lee described influencers as having “subject matter authority, credibility amongst a network and most importantly, the ability to affect actions amongst a network.”

For content marketers, the challenge is to move past the “how can we gain entry into the influencer’s network?” mindset, to instead focus on content partnership opportunities that deliver value on the key topics audiences care about. In his 2014 Content Marketing World presentation, Content + Influencer Marketing = Powerful Way to Grow Your Business, Lee provided fivefundamentalsteps content marketers can follow to plan, implement and optimize influencer marketing programs.

Step 1: Influencer identification

Make a choice on the topic or theme you want to be associated with. Then, use social tools such as Traackr, BuzzSumo, Little BirdorKeyhole to identify those who exert influence on your topic. It’s important to distinguish between those who are popular and those who inspire action because underwhelming results can occur when you engage people who appear popular, but in actuality are “white noise” to the discussion surrounding the topic.

A brandividual is popular. An influencer is effective at creating popularity.

Finally, use self-validation to ensure the identified influencers are producing quality content that aligns with your objectives. Trust your judgement of quality and don’t be afraid to shine a light on up-and-comers who are producing quality work. As Lee said, “work with an influencer, they’re friends for a day. Help someone become influential and they’re a friend for life.”

Step 2: Influencer stalking engagement

Now that you have identified and validated your target influencers, it’s on to romancing them. A few ways you can do this are:

Share status updatesComment on blog postsLiveblog their sessionInterview themCo-create content (you can take the lead on this with thoughtful curation)Interact with them at events, or take advantage of other opportunities to interact “in real life”

Step 3: Influencer recruitment

The simple rule here is to make it super easy for people to participate. A modular approach to content — a tactic that allows influencers to contribute small pieces of information which you can aggregate into a larger anchor piece — makes for easy participation. You can also go the other way with modular content, using influencer contributions in social messages, blog posts and newsletters.

Lee keeps copies of his outreach emails and tracks how well they perform, which allows him to optimize the process. He finds using the word “invitation” in the subject line helps, and providing a visual example can help influencers grasp the context of their participation. You should also use the names of those who have already agreed to participate as others may feel compelled to participate because they “belong” with your current participants. The image below shows even more components of an effective outreach message.

And sometimes you just have to get creative. Lee has used off-the-wall products like “his and her beard scarves” and “brief jerky: edible male underwear” to compel would-be participants.

Step 4: Measure influencer content performance

How good was the content from each influencer? Did they share the content with their networks? Did they engage further with it? What were the sources of your traffic?

Evaluate your own performance as well. Did you make it easy for busy influencers to engage with the content by providing pre-written social messages, links, embed codes and status updates?

A thorough evaluation will reveal the campaign components you should keep, those you should tweak, and those you should toss entirely.

Step 5: Develop an ongoing relationship

There are several tactics marketers can use to strengthen relationships with their new content partners, including:

Offering feedback related to performanceCiting and promoting content partners in blog postsContinuing engagement on social networksReferring their expertiseCiting in contributed articlesIncluding in future projects

Finally, there was an excellent question in the Q & A session which many marketers can relate to. Essentially, the question was, “Influencers probably won’t recognize me or my brand, how can I compel them to participate?”

To get the ball rolling, you may want to consider paying influencers to participate or providing some sort of preferential treatment. If you can convince one well-respected influencer to participate, you can leverage his or her participation in the rest of your outreach efforts. But the easiest (and most cost-effective) way to get influencers to participate is to clearly show how their participation will lead to a remarkable piece of content that provides value to to contributors as well as to your shared audience.

And there you have it: Influencer marketing in five fundamentalsteps. As Lee says, “You can do it, just make a plan, execute and iterate improvements.”

A big thanks to Joe Pulizzi and his team at the Content Marketing Institute for putting on one amazing event. I can’t wait for day two!

Top Gas Companies To Own For 2014

Pipeline blaze in the Gulf. Photo credit: AP Photo/US Coast Guard, Petty Officer 3rd Class Carlos Vega.

So far, 2013 isn't shaping up to be the energy industry's safest year. A number of disasters have occurred, which have brought unwanted attention to the industry. Here's a look at the industry's five biggest blunders so far this year.

A Herculean disaster averted in the Gulf
Just this past week, a blowout occurred on a Hercules (NASDAQ: HERO  ) -owned rig operating in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Natural gas leaking from a well off the coast of Louisiana caught fire and spread to the Hercules rig. Fortunately, all 48 personnel in the rig were safely evacuated. However, the incident underscores the risks of drilling offshore. It could have been a lot worse, as no one was hurt, and this is a natural gas well so the environmental threats are far less than if it were an oil well. While the well is not yet under control, Hercules investors appear to have caught a break, which is why stock was down only about 4% on the week.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Pacific Drilling (PACD) is an international offshore drilling contractor committed to becoming the preferred provider of ultra-deepwater drilling services to the oil and natural gas industry through the use of high-specification rigs. This stock closed up 1% to $9.94 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $9.87-$10.00

    52-Week Range: $8.63-$10.99

    Thursday's Volume: 450,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 308,772

From a technical perspective, PACD bounced modestly higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $9.67 with above-average volume. This stock has been trending sideways and consolidating for the last five months, with shares moving between $8.89 on the downside and $10.23 on the upside. Shares of PACD are now starting to trend within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern. That trade will hit if PACD manages to take out some key overhead resistance levels at $10.14 to $10.23 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in PACD as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $9.81 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 308,772 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PACD will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $10.71 to its 52-week high at $10.99. Any high-volume move above $10.99 will then put its all-time high at $11.47 within range for shares of PACD.

LONDON -- There are things to love and loathe about most companies. Today, I'm going to tell you about three things to loathe aboutGlaxoSmithKline (LSE: GSK  ) (NYSE: GSK  ) .

I'll also be asking whether these negative factors make this FTSE 100 pharmaceuticals giant a poor investment today.

Long-term returns
GSK's long-run total return for shareholders (capital appreciation and dividends over the past 10 years) has lagged behind that of the average FTSE 100 company. Furthermore, as the table below shows, GSK has been one of the poorer performers among its European big pharma peers.

Company Total return
over 10 years
(annualized) Roche 9.4% Novartis 8.6% Sanofi 8.3% GlaxoSmithKline 5.9% AstraZeneca 5.3%

Margin pressures
GSK, like all the established big pharma companies, faces what it calls"intense competition"from generic products within all of its major markets. This is particularly true of the U.S., where GSK has its highest turnover and margins, both of which are now under pressure from generics.

L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. was founded in 1997 and is based in New York, New York.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Smith]

Still, what this leaves us with here is a stock costing perhaps 12.5 times what it might earn this year -- a higher valuation than rivals L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL  ) or Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) fetch, even if a discount to General Dynamics. Meanwhile, Textron's free cash flow projection suggests that the quality of its earnings (perhaps $540 million in total, judging from the guidance) may not be even as good as those of its cheaper rivals.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It's tragic that it took a tragedy like last year's shooting at a Newton, Connecticut elementary school to get the ball rolling. Nevertheless, that ball is rolling now, and it's putting companies like L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:LLL), View Systems Inc. (OTCBB:VSYM), and American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) in the spotlight. How so? Because VSYM, ASEI, and LLL make the tools that are, unfortunately, going to be the only way to absolutely ensure this nation's public schools are secure, and defended from gunmen like Newton's Adam Lanza.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Pitney Bowes (NYSE: PBI  ) also became a victim of a dividend cut as it chose to reduce its payout by half in order to help it conserve cash as its financial results have deteriorated. With the very difficult task of repositioning itself from the largely obsolete postage business to become a more full-service enterprise communications company, Pitney Bowes will need as much spare cash as possible to reinvest in its new business opportunities.

AP, Showtime From a high-end apparel retailer making a down-market move to the leading video service adding to its growing library, here are the wonders and blunders of the week. Amazon.com (AMZN) -- Winner Apple (AAPL) may have hit the market with the new iPad Air on Friday, but it was Amazon making the most of the launch -- to promote its own platform. Amazon has spent most of the week pushing its new 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX tablet at the top of the popular e-tailer's home page, pitting it against the iPad Air. Amazon points out that its Kindle Fire HDX is 20 percent lighter, packs 950,000 more pixels, and will set shoppers back $120 less than the somewhat comparable iPad Air. You have to admire Amazon's moxie here. Apple just moved more than 14 million iPads in its latest quarter -- and that was the older models during a non-holiday quarter. Amazon's willing to butt heads with the top brand in tablets, and it's doing it on a site that it knows will be getting very busy in the coming weeks as holiday shoppers begin to research the best tablet to buy this season. Well played, Amazon. lululemon ahtletica (LULU) -- Blunder When it comes to selling high-end yoga clothing, no one does it as well as lululemon athletica. Sure, there was that embarrassing episode earlier this year where its black Luon yoga pants were too sheer, resulting in the departure of its head of merchandising. However, how do you justify filling that opening by bringing in Kmart's head of apparel to be your new chief products officer? Kmart has struggled with years of declining comps, and it's a lackluster discount department store chain. Even if she was more than qualified for the gig, investor -- and more dangerously customer -- perceptions may mark down lululemon's image. Pitney Bowes (PBI) -- Winner Metered mail may be a fading industry, but that didn't stop Pitney Bowes from hitting a fresh 52-week high this week after posting encouraging quarterly results. • [By Sean Williams]

The end result of these multiple actions has been an ongoing reduction in smoking rates over the past four decades and tougher times for U.S. tobacco producers such as Altria (NYSE: MO  ) and Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI  ) . In fact, a tough domestic sales climate was one reason Altria decided to spin off its overseas operations into Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) in 2008. By separating its business, the hope was that investors would have a better understanding of the fundamental forces driving Altria and Philip Morris.

And lastly, Mankiw mentions emerging markets. If you want to bet against the United States dollar and own a company that generates all of its profits outside the United States, it could be useful to take a look at Philip Morris International (PM). Asia makes up 37% of its profits. The Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe make up 27% of its profits. Smoking rates in countries like Indonesia are increasing at 10-25% annual rates. The Marlboro brand is gaining market share in Asia. The company is planning aggressive expansion into Central Africa. If you want emerging markets exposure, Philip Morris International could be a decent way to cover your bases.
