“There will be blood,” one analyst noted this morning about Hornbeck Offshore Services (HOS) –but his observation could apply to just about the entire offshore-services sector, as Atwood Oceanics (ATW), Diamond Offshore (DO) and Ensco (ESV) tumble.

European Pressphoto Agency

Shares of Hornbeck Offshore Services have slid 6.8% to $38.61, while Atwood Oceanics has fallen 3.5% to $47.82, Diamond Offshore has dropped1.7% to $53.68 and Ensco has slipped 0.9% to $50.

Hornbeck Offshore Services has plunged after missing by a whopping 16 cents. Howard Weil’s John Donnel explains what happened:

We were concerned about this print with our earnings estimate so far below consensus, and the miss versus Street expectations could weigh on the stock. OSV operating metrics took a larger step back than we had modeled during the quarter and we foresee the call will focus on dayrate trends in particular, as average [offshore support vessel] dayrates decreased sequentially for the first time since 2Q11. This, along with an increase in the amount of planned dry dock days is likely to move our near-term earnings estimates down. However, expenses should be lower than prior projections and the [multi-purpose offshore vessels] fleet continues to generate impressive results. The Company longer-term outlook for a gradual recovery in the [Gulf of Mexico], weighted to the back half of the year, remains consistent with previous guidance and our expectations for the market. We continue to believe HOS will generate meaningful earnings and cash flow growth, especially as its newbuild vessels deliveries coincide with contracted ultra-deepwater rig start-ups in the GOM

Top Services Stocks To Invest In 2014: Vapor Corp (VPCO)

Vapor Corp (Vapor), incorporated in 1987, is engaged in designing, marketing and distributing electronic cigarettes and accessories under the Fifty-One, Krave, VaporX, EZ Smoker, Green Puffer, Americig, Fumre Hookah Stix and Smoke Star brands. Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, are battery-powered products that enable users to inhale nicotine vapor without smoke, tar, ash, or carbon monoxide. Electronic cigarettes look like traditional cigarettes and consists of three functional components: a mouthpiece, which is a small plastic cartridge that contains a liquid nicotine solution; a heating element that vaporizes the liquid nicotine so that it can be inhaled; and the electronics, which include: a lithium-ion battery, an airflow sensor, a microchip controller and an light emitting diode (LED), which illuminates to indicate use. When a user draws air through the electronic cigarette, the air flow is detected by a sensor, which activates a heating element that vaporizes the solution stored in the mouthpiece/cartridge, the solution is then vaporized and it is this vapor that is inhaled by the user. The cartridge contains either a nicotine solution or a nicotine free solution, either of which may be flavored. The Company offers rechargeable and disposable electronic cigarettes in two varieties: a two-piece unit, which the Company markets under its DUO product line; and a three-piece unit, which the Company markets under its TRIO product line.

The DUO's 2-part construction (battery component and cartridge) features a disposable all-in-one atomized cartridge (also known as a cartomizer). This cartomizer is replaced when the nicotine or nicotine free solution is depleted from use. The all-in-one configuration eliminates the need for maintenance of a separate atomizer and maintains consistent performance of the e-cigarette over time.

The TRIO's 3-part construction (battery component, atomizer, and filter cartridge) features a separate atom! izer from the cartridge; the atomizer is reused and requires separate maintenance over its useful life. Replacement atomizers are available for sale and are easily serviceable by the user. In the TRIO, the only component that needs to be routinely replaced is the refill cartridge (either with or without nicotine).

The Company's electronic cigarettes are sold in kits. In addition to kits the Company sells replacement batteries, replacement mouthpieces that contain the liquid solution and atomizer, for its two-piece configurations as well as mouthpieces with the liquid solution and separate atomizers for its three-piece units. Last week, I talked about small cap electronic cigarette stocks Vapor Corp (OTCMKTS: VPCO) and Hop-On Inc (OTCMKTS: HPNN) as being among the last of the e-Cigstocks not controlled by ig Tobacco, but Victory Electronic Cigarettes Corp (OTCMKTS: ECIG), mCig Inc (OTCBB: MCIG) and American Heritage International (OTCBB: AHII)are alsopositioning themselves or their technology to exploit opportunities in the e-Cig market or even inmarijuana or cannabis. Last year, industry experts were already saying thatUS retail sales of e-cigarettes could reach $1 billion for the yearfor roughly1% of the country's cigarette market. That number might appear small, but its more than double 2012 salesas sales increasinglymove off the Internet and into more mainstream retailers thanks to their positioning as aealthieralternative to smoking.

    2. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) The REIT is another alternative vehicle that's gone mainstream in recent years. Hundreds of broad-based and specialized real estate companies and ETFs are available, and after a correction a few months ago, many are on the cheap side. Like any other alternative, this should be a seasoning for your portfolio and not the sauce itself. For most retail investors, a stake in an indexed fund like the SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSE: RWR) should be more than adequate, or look into the companies that provide services to the REIT industry like HFF (NYSE: HF) and Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL).

Hot International Companies To Buy For 2014: Genomic Health Inc (GHDX)

Genomic Health, Inc. (Genomic Health), incorporated in August 2000, is a molecular diagnostics company focused on the global development and commercialization of genomic-based clinical laboratory services that analyze the underlying biology of cancer allowing physicians and patients to make individualized treatment decisions. Its Oncotype DX platform utilizes quantitative genomic analysis known as reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), in standard tumor pathology specimens to provide tumor-specific information, or the oncotype of a tumor. As of February 2012, Oncotype DX was evaluated in invasive breast cancer in 13 clinical studies involving more than 4,000 breast cancer patients worldwide. Genomic Health offers its Oncotype DX tests as a clinical service, where it analyzes the expression levels of genes in tumor tissue samples and provide physicians with a quantitative gene expression profile expressed as a single quantitative score, which it calls a Recurrence Score, for invasive breast cancer and colon cancer and a DCIS Score for DCIS. Its Oncotype DX breast cancer test analyzes the expression levels of 21 genes and Oncotype DX colon cancer test analyzes the expression levels of 12 genes. In March 2012, the Company established a wholly owned subsidiary, InVitae Corporation.

Oncotype DX Platform

The Company Oncotype DX platform uses its RT-PCR approach to improve cancer treatment decisions. Its diagnostic approach correlates gene expression to clinical outcomes and provides an individualized analysis of each patient's tumor. The Company has built a diagnostic infrastructure that allows it to move from research into development through to processing actual patient samples in its clinical reference laboratory. The Company offers Oncotype DX tests as clinical laboratory services. Its technology allows the Company to analyze tumor tissue samples in its clinical reference laboratory and provide physicians with genomic information specific to the patient'! s tumor. It analyzes tissues that are handled, processed and stored under routine clinical pathology laboratory practices.

Oncotype DX Breast Cancer Test

To develop its Oncotype DX breast cancer test, the Company evaluated 250 genes in three independent clinical studies, which identified a 21-gene panel whose composite gene expression profile can be represented by a breast cancer Recurrence Score. The Company conducted studies of its Oncotype DX breast cancer test with clinical samples from postmenopausal women with invasive breast cancer who were treated with aromatase inhibitors. In March 2010, the Journal of Clinical Oncology published results from a European study using its test to analyze tumor samples from over 1,200 patients in the ATAC (Arimedix, Tamoxifen, Alone or in Combination) trial, which established the use of aromatase inhibitors for adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. The study demonstrated that, along with other standard measures, such as tumor size, its Oncotype DX breast cancer test contributes independently to provide a more complete picture of prognosis for N- and N+ patients treated with aromatase inhibitors.

In December 2011, the Company presented positive results from the ECOG E5194 DCIS clinical validation study at SABCS. The study met its primary endpoint by demonstrating that a pre-specified Oncotype DX DCIS Score can predict the risk of local recurrence, defined as either the development of a new invasive breast cancer or the recurrence of DCIS in the same breast. In December 2011, the Company made Oncotype DX available for patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), of the breast, a pre-invasive form of breast cancer. The launch of Oncotype DX for DCIS patients was based on positive results presented from a clinical validation study of Oncotype DX breast cancer test in patients with DCIS, conducted by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), a clinical trials cooperative! group su! pported by the National Cancer Institute.

Oncotype DX Colon Cancer Test

The Company developed its gene panel by identifying 761 cancer-related genes through review of existing research literature and computer analysis of genomic databases. The 761 candidate genes were also examined to determine whether they would be useful beyond other key variables including tumor stage, tumor grade, lymph nodes examined and MMR/MSI. It selected a final set of 12 genes, which were then independently evaluated in a validation study of over 1,400 stage II colon cancer patients from the Quick and Simple and Reliable (QUASAR), randomized study of adjuvant chemotherapy in the United Kingdom. This international, multi-center randomized trial examined the recurrence risk and the benefit associated with 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin, or 5FU/LV, adjuvant chemotherapy. Gene expression was quantified by RT-PCR from manually microdissected FPE primary colon cancer tissue, and recurrence-free interval, disease-free survival and overall survival were analyzed. In January 2012, the Company presented positive results of the first clinical decision making study of the Oncotype DX colon cancer test that shows that Recurrence Score result has a significant impact on treatment recommendations for stage II colon cancer patients.

For veteran traders who've kept tabs on Sigma Labs Inc. (OTCMKTS:SGLB) over the past three months or so, it may be surprising to hear someone suggest it as a buy. Like so many other stocks of its ilk have done since the beginning of the organized market, SGLB went from (proverbially) zero to hero between late May and mid-July with a move from $0.025 to a peak of $0.118 only to fall back to the $0.04 level a couple of weeks later. It's the relatively common "one hit wonder", and if Sigma Labs followed the usual pattern of other small stocks that burned brilliantly for a few days, we wouldn't see anything particularly bullish from SGLB for a few months, if not years.

Reed Saxon/APToyota's North American headquarters in Torrance, Calif. As part of a companywide overhaul, Toyota Motor (TM) is planning to move its sales and marketing headquarters to suburban Dallas from Torrance, Calif., according to reports. The company will restructure its marketing arm, which currently is based in Torrance in southern California, and houses about 5,300 employees, who are being offered a redundancy package under the reorganization that is set to begin Thursday. The move would put Toyota's management closer to its operations that produce cars for the U.S. market and would reduce production costs. It is still unclear how many employees will be asked to move from the Torrance unit and how much time would elapse before the transition is complete. Employees "whose positions are significantly different in the new organization have been provided with several options, including applying for opportunities within the new marketing organization or in other departments at [Toyota Motor Sales] or Toyota Financial Services," the company said, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Japanese automaker has vehicle assembly plants in Kentucky, Indiana, Texas and Mississippi, along with technical centers in Michigan and California, while its manufacturing operations headquarters for the U.S. market is based in Erlanger, Ky. It has operations primarily in the United States, Europe, and internationally. The company was incorporated in 2005 and is based in New York, New York.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Morgans Hotel Group (MHGC) operates, owns, acquires, develops and redevelops boutique hotels, primarily in gateway cities and select resort markets in the U.S., Europe and other international locations and nightclubs, restaurants. This stock closed up 3.8% to $6.99 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $6.73-$7.06

    52-Week Range: $4.66-$8.15

    Tuesday's Volume: 388,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 196,219

From a technical perspective, MHGC spiked higher here right above its 200-day moving average of $6.45 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of MHGC within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if MHGC manages to take out Tuesday's high of $7.06 and then once it takes out more near-term resistance at $7.20 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MHGC as long as it's trending above its 200-day at $6.41 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 196,219 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then MHGC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $8 to its 52-week high at $8.15. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give MHGC a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $9 to $10.

The balance of trade is the difference between a nation exports and its imports. A crucial point to note is that both goods and services are counted for exports and imports, as a result of which a nation has a balance of trade for goods (also known as the erchandise trade balance and a balance of trade for services. The net or overall figure forms the balance of trade or rade balance,a major contributor to a country's economic well-being. A nation has a trade surplus if its exports are greater than its imports; if imports are greater than exports, the nation has a trade deficit.

Trade Data Census Basis and BOP Basis
While data on a nation exports and imports of physical goods can be collated from customs documents such as export declarations and import manifests, this is not possible for trade in intangible services. The latter is therefore compiled based on the flow of funds, the foundation on which balance of payments (BOP) trade statistics are based. Advisors' Opinion:

Thanks to the Environmental Protection Agency, you can now eat more of Monsanto's (NYSE: MON  ) herbicide Roundup in your food.

Because there wasn't anywhere near as much coverage as there was for President Obama signing into law the so-called "Monsanto Protection Act" -- which prohibits federal courts from halting the sale of genetically modified or engineered seeds -- the decision by the regulatory agency to increase the acceptable level of pesticides permitted on food crops went through without much of a fight (though the EPA received nearly 11,000 public comments opposing the move).

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

While DuPont has built a diversified business around its three focus areas, it still faces stiff competition. For example its agriculture business, which focuses on seeds, traits, and crop protection puts it up against the likes of Monsanto (NYSE: MON  ) and Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW  ) . That competition with Monsanto cost the company a lot of money in legal fees and ended with DuPont agreeing to a $1.75 billion licensing deal with the seed giant. The good news, though, is that now instead of competing against Monsanto, the two will be collaborating as DuPont gains access to some key patents in Monsanto's portfolio.

If you saw the alarming headlines circulating everywhere this morning, then there's a good chance you've already taken on a new position in Fortinet Inc. (NASDAQ:FTNT) and Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:CHKP). Both are solutions to the underscored problem, and truth be told, likely will benefit from ugly reality this morning's news is spreading. FTNT and CHKP may not be the best ways to play the news-based investing theme, however. The best long-term play is a solutions provider called Staffing 360 Solutions Inc. (OTCBB:STAF). While the company may not superficially sit in the same category as Fortinet or Check Point Software Technologies, fundamentally, it does, and may actually be better positioned for growth.

    Is it safe?
Network and data-security expert Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT  ) also got a taste of what it means to come up short of expectations, as it pre-announced earnings that were well below analyst forecasts. It laid the blame on a handful of U.S. service providers, who failed to come through in closing deals, and noted that its telecom vertical market will amount to 25% of first-quarter revenue compared to 30% last year. Its stock plunged 13%, and dragged down much of the security sector with it, though by not nearly as much. Sourcefire was down less than 2%, Palo Alto Networkswas down 1%, and Check Point Softwarewas off less than 1%.

A week and a half ago I was singing the bullish praises of MeetMe Inc. (NYSEMKT:MEET). Not only was I impressed by the way shares of MEET had wrestled their way from underneath some serious technical resistance, I was sure that modest nudge was the beginning of several more breakthroughs that would propel the stock to much higher highs and reward faithful investors who stepped in on my advice.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

With today's 15% pop just staring you in the face, it would be tempting for current MeetMe Inc. (NYSEMKT:MEET) shareholders to lock their profit in and walk away. It would also be a mistake, though. See, while MEET is admittedly a volatile mess in the short run, for the long haul, there's a lot more upside left to tap.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

I hate to be the one to say I told you so, but, I told you so. Within the past week I suggested both FX Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FXEN) and MeetMe Inc. (NYSEMKT:MEET) were on the verge of breakouts, and sure enough, both are making good on that promise today; FXEN is up 5%, and MEET shares are higher by nearly 13%. Granted, the market's bullish tide is helping... a little. But, with both of these stocks outpacing the market's gain today, odds are that we would have seen these breakout moves anyway.

Last Friday when yours truly suggested MeetMe Inc. (NYSEMKT:MEET) shares were taking flight and were a "buy", I didn't aim to imply it was going to be the next Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) or LinkedIn Corp. (NYSE:LNKD). It was just a short-term idea assuming the near-term technical clues would get traction. Today's action from MEET seals that deal.
