Dell Entering the Smartphone Market… Oops!

Rumors have been bouncing around for some time now that Dell may be entering the smartphone market. While Dell isn't present at MWC this year, AT&T (NYSE: T) Mobility CEO Ralph De La Vega is, and during a panel at the event he let the following gem slip through his lips:

"Dell announced they're entering the smart phone market."

That's exactly what he said.

Now, I realize that isn't a quote from anyone at Dell, but when Ralph De La Vega says something, there must be some truth to it. One has to think now that AT&T and Dell have been working together or have at the very least been in discussions about a new smartphone from Dell. I'm sure we'll get some reaction from Dell on this in the near future.

Cortado Turns SMS Texts into E-Mail

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 05:56 AM PST

sms2desk1

Some people live and breathe Outlook e-mail all day long, to the extent that they neglect the computer's minuscule computing cousin, the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM). SMS is still a popular format for quick messages, especially those without e-mail-capable handsets, so those anchored to the desk can easily miss out on SMS messages. Luckily, Cortado just released SMS2Desk, a free application that will shunt recieved SMS messages to a designated e-mail account. In addition to giving you a heads-up for SMS messages, this also acts as a good way of keeping track of text messages which would otherwise be victim to regular memory dumps on your BlackBerry. The conversion works both ways, allowing you to also reply to SMS messages by e-mail on your desktop. A premium version running for 4.98 EUR gives you a few more options:

  • Multi-SMS: Allows you to send several SMS with one e-mail. Write as many as you want!
  • Editable e-mail address: forward and save all SMS to another e-mail account (for example).
  • Limit the maximum number of text messages sent. Allows even prolific writers to maintain full cost control.
  • SMS sent confirmation via E-Mail: so you always know if your SMS was sent.

Nokia, T-Mobile team-up on integrated mobile content marketplace

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 05:52 AM PST

Ovi StoreNokia (NYSE: NOK) and T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) issued a release today saying that they've agreed to promote together their respective offering for widgets, applications and other content.

There are some things I don't quite understand. Here's an excerpt from the press release:

The customer can browse and download widgets from both the T-Mobile widget gallery and Nokia's Ovi Store using T-Mobile's web'n'walk widget platform. The integrated marketplace will be available during the second half 2009 on mass market Nokia Series 40 platform based phones.

T-Mobile's web'n'walk widget platform will be supported on Series 40 based feature phones, the highest selling devices in Europe to date. A Java based widget client makes it possible for both offerings to co-exist.

This co-operation takes the new web'n'walk widget platform into the mass market and opens up the long tail of applications and services from Nokia's Ovi Store and T-Mobile's widget gallery.

Now does this mean that T-Mobile customers with Nokia Series 40 phones will basically have two application stores on their handsets - one from Nokia and the other one from T-Mobile? If that's the case, it's kinda stupid.

On the other hand, maybe Nokia wants to integrate T-Mobile's widget offering into its upcoming Ovi Store. That, on the other hand, could be a brilliant idea and would certainly help the Finnish giant reach other carriers as well.

Whatever the case is we'll have to wait for the H2 2009 and see for ourselves how this works in real life. In the meantime, T-Mobile's customers will get a chance to try out the carrier's new web'n'walk client/app which should launch at some point in spring. Stay tuned…

Nokia announces new partnerships with Qualcomm and Broadcom

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 05:40 AM PST

Nokia logo

Today Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced two partnership agreements. The first of the two involves Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM), along with whom the Finnish giant will work together to develop "advanced UMTS mobile devices," initially for North America. The idea is to use Nokia's S60 platform and leverage Qualcomm's advanced Mobile Station Modem MSM7xxx-series and MSM8xxx-series chipsets for "cutting-edge processing performance and ubiquitous mobile broadband capabilities." The first devices based on this collaboration are expected to launch in mid-2010 and be compatible with the forthcoming Symbian Foundation platform.

In second partnership news, Nokia announced that it is extending its existing 2G relationship with Broadcom (NSDQ: BRCM), making the semiconductor company a next generation 3G baseband, radio frequency and mixed signal chipset system supplier for worldwide markets. The two parties will cooperate on technology, including Nokia modem technology…

HTC Magic Launch Video at Mobile World Congress 2009

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 05:22 AM PST

Here's the quick hype video Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) showed us at their press conference, showing off all the snazzy utilities of Android running on their new Magic device. While I haven't had the chance to try it hands-on just yet, a fellow blogger has assured me that it stands very separately from the G1. Honestly, I'll believe it when I see it. A few new updates stowed away in Cupcake might be making a Magical appearance, but odds are we'll see them on the G1 shortly thereafter.

Palm shows off UMTS version of the Pre; Announces webOS development book

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 05:00 AM PST

Palm webOS: Developing Applications in JavaScript Using the Palm Mojo FrameworkPalm is showing off the UMTS version of its Pre smartphone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Not much is known at this stage, but some rumors suggest the Treo maker is in talks with Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), which would certainly help the company access many European markets. As for the release date, we've only heard GSM Pre will debut at some point in the second half of the year.

On a separate note, Palm (NSDQ: PALM) announced that O'Reilly Media will be publishing a book about developing for Palm's new mobile platform. The book, titled "Palm webOS: Developing Applications in JavaScript Using the Palm Mojo Framework," will be written by Palm's VP and Software CTO Mitch Allen and his development team. The first chapter of the book is already available on the Palm Developer Network site, and interested developers will be able to sign up and get new chapters as they're written through O'Reilly's "Rough Cuts" service. The complete book will be published upon release of the Mojo SDK.

My two cents? I like the news but I don't like the timeframe. This time, faster is better! ;)

Vodafone Announces Android-Powered HTC Magic

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 04:17 AM PST

htc-magic1

We had seen a few pictures of the next Android handset informally dubbed the G2, but now Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) and HTC have gone official with the European launch of the Magic. During Q&A they were rather mum about North American availability, but we do have some hard and fast specs. Really, it just boils down to an all-touchscreen G1.

Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) MSM7201a 528 MHz processor
512 MB ROM, 192 MB RAM
113 x 55 x 13.65 mm, 118.5 g (w/ battery)
3.2″ TFT, 320 x 480 HVGA capacitive touchscreen
900/2100 Mhz HSPA, 850/900/1800/1900 Mhz EDGE
GPS, Bluetooth
ExtUSB jack (dang, proprietary headphones only)

Germany, Spain, Italy, UK and France are all slated to get some Magic, but pricing will be announced later. As far as HTC's announcements go for MWC 2009, you can tack this one alongside the Touch Pro 2 and Diamond 2. Keep an eye out for the HTC Magic this Spring.

[via Vodafone]

Press release behind the jump…

BARCELONA — Feb 17, 2009 — Vodafone and HTC Corporation today announced the HTC Magic smartphone, Vodafone's first Android-powered mobile, which will be available in the spring.

The stylish new handset is exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, Spain, Germany and France (SFR) and available on a non-exclusive basis in Italy. Customers can ensure that they are the first to receive information about the HTC Magic's availability, pricing and pre-ordering by registering their interest via their local Vodafone website from today.

The introduction of the HTC Magic is the result of a successful relationship between Vodafone and HTC, and Vodafone's joining, late last year, of the Open Handset Alliance.

A tablet-style device, with a sleek design and unprecedented compactness for a smartphone featuring the Android platform, the HTC Magic enables a superior mobile internet experience, providing broad flexibility for personalisation via the application-rich Android Market. Available in white in the UK, Spain and France, black in Germany and in both colours in Italy, the HTC Magic will be for sale in several other Vodafone markets over the next few months.

"Delivering an unbeatable mobile internet experience for our customers is a priority for Vodafone, so we are very excited to be introducing our first Android-powered smartphone in the spring," says Patrick Chomet, Global Director of Terminals, Vodafone Group. "Following our joining of the Open Handset Alliance, we have worked very closely with HTC to bring this cool new phone to the market. Our customers want to access a wide range of the most attractive mobile devices to help them make the most of their time - the HTC Magic helps meet that need."

"The HTC Magic embodies the compact style and sophistication for which HTC has come to be known, with the powerful and intuitive internet experience for which the Android platform was designed," says Peter Chou, president and CEO, HTC Corporation. "We are proud of our partnership with Vodafone and excited about making the Android-powered HTC Magic available to Vodafone customers in Europe."

"The announcement of the HTC Magic is an important step for Android and the Open Handset Alliance," says Andy Rubin, Senior Director of Mobile Platforms at Google (NSDQ: GOOG). "With it, Vodafone is opening up the mobile web for consumers across Europe and giving more third-party developers a platform on which they can build the next wave of killer applications."

Available from free on various price plans, the HTC Magic has a 3.2" QVGA touch screen display and features a trackball and navigational buttons for quick, easy access. The HTC Magic includes a variety of email options such as Google Mail™, POP3 and IMAP as well as Google Talk™ for instant messaging.

The HTC Magic has a variety of powerful mobile internet capabilities beginning with an Android-optimised Webkit browser. It also features the popular Google™ applications, Google Maps™ and Google Search™ as well as favourites like YouTube™. In addition, Android Market allows for quick and easy downloading of games and applications utilising Vodafone's fast and reliable network.

Full details of availability and pricing will be available in the future in local Vodafone markets.

ZTE announces new data cards, mobile broadband support for Windows 7

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 03:21 AM PST

ZTE

With over 10 million units shipped last year, China-based ZTE is the world's second largest supplier of HSPA data cards. Now at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona they are announcing the launch of two such products:

  • First comes the MF662, which was specifically designed to work with the HSPA+ networks. Even though it measures just 69×27x12 mm, the data card offers download and upload rates of up to 21.6Mbps and 5.76Mbps, respectively.
  • The second product that was announced is the MF645. At just 93×28.8×12.9 mm, it's the "world's smallest TV data card," enabling users to watch digital television on their computers over a 3G connection. The ZTE MF645 supports download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and upload speeds of up to 2Mbps.

In the other news, ZTE said that their complete line of mobile broadband data cards will support Windows 7 and will be compliant with the Windows Network Driver Interface Specification 6.20, NDIS6.20.

Orange at MWC: LG Touch Watch phone, Orange Care, new widgets, app store goes multi-platform and more

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 03:02 AM PST

Orange

French mobile operator, Orange, announced some interesting stuff at this year's Mobile World Congress. Let's briefly go through their news, shall we:

  • First and I guess the most interesting news item is that they've managed to score the exclusive launch rights for the highly anticipated LG Watch Phone in Europe. We've seen LG's cool product at CES when we covered it. I'll only add that Orange will bring LG's wearable baby to many of the Europe's markets where it operates. (release)
  • Then we've seen them launching the Orange Care, a three-tiered package that provides customers with such services as easy transfer of contacts and content at point of sale, insurance and backup (i.e. extended warranty and regular backup of contacts and content), and phone recycle service. (release)
  • Orange also announced the launch of its mobile widget offering. Set to start operating in May of this year, Orange will bring a selection of simple, connected mobile widgets, such as weather updates and news alerts to its entire Signature customer base. The same release also talks about Orange's plans to add multiple platform support to its Application Shop. (release)
  • Orange's strategic partnership with Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) is now extended to additional two years "opening the door to more fun and easy mobile multimedia services." As a result, the France Telecom-owned mobile operator will add an array of Sony Ericsson handsets in its portfolio, with some of them being a part of the carrier's Signature Series. For the record, Orange is the biggest provider of Walkman phones in Europe. (release)
  • Finally, the carrier signed three-year pan-European agreement with HP to distribute a range of notebooks and HP Minis with mobile and/or fixed broadband access across its markets. That being said, customers in UK will be able to grab the new HP Compaq Mini 700 for 30 GBP a month. The package consists of Orange's "Internet Everywhere" mobile broadband service and dongle as well as a 3GB data allowance and 24 month manufacturer warranty. (release)

More information about Orange is available from their website.

Live from Mobile World Congress: Hands-on with the 8MP Nokia N86

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 02:50 AM PST

nokia-n86-hands-on-mobile-world-congress-21Nothing compares to actually putting hands on a new handset. No matter how much you read about a new piece of mobile hardware, there's just no substitute for getting up close and personal with a new device. At a Nokia (NYSE: NOK) press conference held this morn, the Finnish cellphone maker unveiled their new Nokia N86 8-megapixel cameraphone to a small group of tech-enthusiasts - and we had a chance to play with the new Nseries multimedia slider.

As Dusan already pointed out, the Nokia N86 packs in an 8megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and Carl Zeiss Tessar optis, a crystal-clear 2.6-inch OLED QVGA screen, HSPA, GPS, WiFi, TV-out, compass, 8 GB of internal memory storage, and a microSD expansion slot. But, what the spec-sheet doesn't convey is the quality of finish and build that we see in the Nokia N86.

The Nokia N86 resembles its slightly downrange sibling, the Nokia N85, with a dual-slider form-factornokia-n86-hands-on-mobile-world-congress-18 to slides up to reveal a keypad and down to reveal media controls (playback and whatnot). But, where the Nokia N85's slider mechanism tends to feel a little loose and wobbly at times, the Nokia N86's slider is rock solid and smooth. There's absolutely no jiggle, no wiggle, not even a hint of play in the sliding mechanism. And, then there's the tasteful metallic accents that highlight the handset's place as a high-end Nseries handset. Combine all that with a build quality that's unrivalled by any other handset (even from Nokia's own product portfolio), and you've got a seriously badass cameraphone.

Nokia says that the 8-megapixel camera has been (and still is, as it undergoes continued refinement prior to launch) optimized to make the best use of the Carl Zeiss Tessar lens. Low-lighting conditions are no problem for the Nokia N86, as evidenced by a couple poster-sized night-shots that Nokia so proudly showed off at the press conference. The trick to making a great cameraphone isn't just about pixel density, but overall camera performance (light sensitivity, shot-to-shot time, shutter lag, etc.) and Nokia takes that philosophy to heart.

Enjoy our Nokia N86 picture gallery and hands-on video!

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 02:29 AM PST

LGLG and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) announced an expanded alliance to increase the number of Windows Mobile-powered LG phones. Skype to Integrate with Nokia N97, Rest of N-Series to Come

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 02:20 AM PST

SkypeThe VoIP service provider we all know and love, Skype, has joined hands in holy softwarimony with handset giant Nokia (NYSE: NOK), with apps preloaded on N97 models this third quarter. Awareness and instant messaging through Skype will be built right into the address book, and though starting only with the N97, should spread throughout the rest of the N series before the end of the year. Third party solutions like IM+ and Fring have been available on S60 for some time, but with a solid and official partnership, Skype and Nokia will be able to really tap into that VoIPing crowd who need to save on otherwise high-cost calls. On a related note, while swinging by the Skype booth at Mobile Focus last night, they mentioned that there's a new Xperia tile available.  Way to hit up the big names there, Skype.

Nokia enters the 8 megapixel race with N86 8MP

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 01:49 AM PST

Today at the press breakfast, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) unveiled its ticket for the ongoing 8 megapixel race. It's called the N86 8MP and it's a slider-shaped Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 smartphone. As you're about to see from the images bellow, the device looks quite sexy, but what images can't tell you is how it feels in the hand. In a word - perfect! I can go that far saying that the N86 8MP is probably the best-built Nokia device to date, feeling as solid as like it was made out of metal not plastic.

Aside from boasting an 8 megapixel camera with wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens along with what they say is the 3rd generation of dual-LED flash - the N86 8MP also boasts a gorgeous 2.6-inch OLED QVGA screen with scratch resistant hardened glass, HSPA, GPS, WiFi, TV-out, compass, 8 GB of internal memory storage, microSD expansion slot. Like with any other NSeries device released in the near future, Ovi Suite comes pre-loaded with the device, allowing instant sharing of photos and videos.

As for the release date and pricing, Nokia will begin shipping the N86 8MP in Q2 2009 for an estimated retail price of 375 EUR, before taxes and subsidies.

Will and Simon took some real-life shots of the device, which are coming soon. In the meantime, check out official Nokia photos and the official release after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE - When Nokia set out to make the best mobile imaging device, it combined wide-angle Carl Zeiss optics and an 8 megapixel sensor, resulting in performance comparable to a stand alone digital camera. The Nokia N86 8MP is designed to excel in both bright and low light conditions, and it's optimized for both video and still imaging. Its high-speed connectivity ensures easy and convenient sharing. The Nokia N86 8MP is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2009 with an estimated retail price of EUR 375, before taxes and subsidies.

"People demand mobile cameras that take excellent pictures in all light conditions," says Juha-Pekka Sipponen, Director, Nokia Nseries. "That's why the aperture of the Nokia N86 8MP is comparable to that of a high-quality, stand-alone digital camera. Whether it's running with the bulls in Pamplona or capturing the panoramic beauty of a sunrise over Sydney, the Nokia N86 8MP will take brilliantly clear, wide-angle images that are instantly geotagged to be uploaded onto sites like Ovi Share or Flickr."

Easy enough for a novice to use, the Nokia N86 8MP packs enough punch to impress an experienced photographer. This includes a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for panoramic pictures, shorter latencies and variable aperture for super sharp photos in challenging bright and low light conditions. The fast mechanical shutter ensures pictures with less motion blur while the dual LED camera flash is powerful enough for excellent photography and video capture.

"When it comes to taking the best digital photos, it's the quality of the lens and the sensor that count, not just the quantity of pixels. The Nokia N86 8MP is the first mobile device with variable aperture, adding to the Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for excellent results. It has never been easier to capture special moments in such a great quality," says Helmut Heier of Carl Zeiss.

Every detail of the metal-framed Nokia N86 8MP is thoughtfully designed with photography in mind, including 8 GB of internal memory for up to 4,000 images. Like any high-end digital camera, the memory can be increased with an exchangeable 16 GB microSD card. The device also offers a bright OLED screen with scratch resistant hardened glass, easy photo management, full sync capability with a PC and TV-out support for slide shows.

Shipping with the latest version of Nokia Maps and full Ovi integration, the Nokia N86 8MP gives a personal dimension to photos and videos. People can share their location with personal content like geotagged photos. The Nokia N86 8MP comes with a built-in compass, along with an integrated 3-months license for full voice and pedestrian navigation so that happy snappers don't lose their way when capturing life through the camera lens.

Multimedia features - music, games, video

The Nokia N86 8MP, with its integrated kick stand, is ideal for watching videos and playing games. Each Nokia N86 8MP can play up to 25 hours of music on one charge which can be enjoyed with the Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-214 also announced today. People can build a personal music collection from the millions of tracks and playlists available from the Nokia Music Store, where available.

EmozeEmoze aka push email provider for the rest of us (not just BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) users) has two announcements for the Mobile World Congress:

LG Globus TU330 Set for Rogers Launch

Posted: 16 Feb 2009 01:57 PM PST

lg-globus-tu330To go along with the LG Secret TU750 that I mentioned earlier in the day, looks like there's another device set to hit Rogers (NYSE: RCI) soon… The LG Globus TU330.

While not heavy on the features, the Globus is a flip phone that packs a 1.3MP camera with video capabilities. There's GPS, stereo bluetooth… and the best part… The price. It will be only $19.99 on a 3-year contract. If you're looking for a simple device for everyday incoming and outgoing calls, with some simple apps on-board, it's worth a look.

No details on when this device from LG will launch on Rogers, but like the Secret, expect it to pop up within a month or so.

img_3108The Samsung Ultra Touch was the last of three new handsets announced by Samsung today (the Blue Earth got an honourable mention). The S8300 is a classy little number with a slide-out keypad, full AMOLED WQVGA screen that clocks in at 2.8″ and 240 x 400 pixels. It's packing an 8 meagpixel camera (like just about every other new phone these days, it seems), with auto-focus, face detection and geotagging through its integrated GPS unit. The TouchWiz UI wasn't anything new, and based on the slide of the Blue Earth handset, we're presuming it will run the same. Other specs of the Samsung Ultra Touch include:

  • HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
  • Quad Band EDGE
  • 8 Megapixel CMOS camera
  • FM radio, stereo Bluetooth
  • AGPS
  • 110 x 51.5 12.7 mm

Samsung Launches two Beat Phones For DJs who Can't Afford Turntables

Posted: 16 Feb 2009 08:59 AM PST

img_3105Samsung's has two new additions to their Beat lineup for the musically-inclined: the DJ M7600 and Disc M6710. Both feature HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps, 2.6″ AMOLED WQVGA (240 x 400 (touchscreens), 3 megapixel cameras, and very cool disc-style user interfaces. The Beat DJ features a remixing application that lets you bust out some impromptu scratch routines, including lowpass, highpass, reverb, tempo, and lots of other changes to bring out your inner tunesmith. As spotted before the show, the DJ hosts some proper Bang and Olufsen speakers to share your sheer pimptitude with passersby. The Disc version's only difference seems to be subbing out GPS for a slide-out keypad, and skipping the advanced DJ software. A very cool idea, overall. Video to come!
