Rumors have been bouncing around for some time now that Dell may be entering the smartphone market. While Dell isn't present at MWC this year, AT&T (NYSE: T) Mobility CEO Ralph De La Vega is, and during a panel at the event he let the following gem slip through his lips:
That's exactly what he said. Now, I realize that isn't a quote from anyone at Dell, but when Ralph De La Vega says something, there must be some truth to it. One has to think now that AT&T and Dell have been working together or have at the very least been in discussions about a new smartphone from Dell. I'm sure we'll get some reaction from Dell on this in the near future. [Via: GearLog] Related News from IntoMobile:

Cortado Turns SMS Texts into E-Mail Posted: 17 Feb 2009 05:56 AM PST Some people live and breathe Outlook e-mail all day long, to the extent that they neglect the computer's minuscule computing cousin, the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM). SMS is still a popular format for quick messages, especially those without e-mail-capable handsets, so those anchored to the desk can easily miss out on SMS messages. Luckily, Cortado just released SMS2Desk, a free application that will shunt recieved SMS messages to a designated e-mail account. In addition to giving you a heads-up for SMS messages, this also acts as a good way of keeping track of text messages which would otherwise be victim to regular memory dumps on your BlackBerry. The conversion works both ways, allowing you to also reply to SMS messages by e-mail on your desktop. A premium version running for 4.98 EUR gives you a few more options:

Nokia, T-Mobile team-up on integrated mobile content marketplace Posted: 17 Feb 2009 05:52 AM PST Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) issued a release today saying that they've agreed to promote together their respective offering for widgets, applications and other content. There are some things I don't quite understand. Here's an excerpt from the press release:
Now does this mean that T-Mobile customers with Nokia Series 40 phones will basically have two application stores on their handsets - one from Nokia and the other one from T-Mobile? If that's the case, it's kinda stupid. On the other hand, maybe Nokia wants to integrate T-Mobile's widget offering into its upcoming Ovi Store. That, on the other hand, could be a brilliant idea and would certainly help the Finnish giant reach other carriers as well. Whatever the case is we'll have to wait for the H2 2009 and see for ourselves how this works in real life. In the meantime, T-Mobile's customers will get a chance to try out the carrier's new web'n'walk client/app which should launch at some point in spring. Stay tuned… Related News from IntoMobile:

HTC Magic Launch Video at Mobile World Congress 2009 Posted: 17 Feb 2009 05:22 AM PST
Here's the quick hype video Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) showed us at their press conference, showing off all the snazzy utilities of Android running on their new Magic device. While I haven't had the chance to try it hands-on just yet, a fellow blogger has assured me that it stands very separately from the G1. Honestly, I'll believe it when I see it. A few new updates stowed away in Cupcake might be making a Magical appearance, but odds are we'll see them on the G1 shortly thereafter. Related News from IntoMobile:

Palm shows off UMTS version of the Pre; Announces webOS development book Posted: 17 Feb 2009 05:00 AM PST Palm is showing off the UMTS version of its Pre smartphone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Not much is known at this stage, but some rumors suggest the Treo maker is in talks with Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), which would certainly help the company access many European markets. As for the release date, we've only heard GSM Pre will debut at some point in the second half of the year. On a separate note, Palm (NSDQ: PALM) announced that O'Reilly Media will be publishing a book about developing for Palm's new mobile platform. The book, titled "Palm webOS: Developing Applications in JavaScript Using the Palm Mojo Framework," will be written by Palm's VP and Software CTO Mitch Allen and his development team. The first chapter of the book is already available on the Palm Developer Network site, and interested developers will be able to sign up and get new chapters as they're written through O'Reilly's "Rough Cuts" service. The complete book will be published upon release of the Mojo SDK. My two cents? I like the news but I don't like the timeframe. This time, faster is better! Related News from IntoMobile:

Vodafone Announces Android-Powered HTC Magic Posted: 17 Feb 2009 04:17 AM PST We had seen a few pictures of the next Android handset informally dubbed the G2, but now Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) and HTC have gone official with the European launch of the Magic. During Q&A they were rather mum about North American availability, but we do have some hard and fast specs. Really, it just boils down to an all-touchscreen G1.
Germany, Spain, Italy, UK and France are all slated to get some Magic, but pricing will be announced later. As far as HTC's announcements go for MWC 2009, you can tack this one alongside the Touch Pro 2 and Diamond 2. Keep an eye out for the HTC Magic this Spring. Live from Mobile World Congress: Hands-on with the 8MP Nokia N86 Posted: 17 Feb 2009 02:50 AM PST Nothing compares to actually putting hands on a new handset. No matter how much you read about a new piece of mobile hardware, there's just no substitute for getting up close and personal with a new device. At a Nokia (NYSE: NOK) press conference held this morn, the Finnish cellphone maker unveiled their new Nokia N86 8-megapixel cameraphone to a small group of tech-enthusiasts - and we had a chance to play with the new Nseries multimedia slider. As Dusan already pointed out, the Nokia N86 packs in an 8megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and Carl Zeiss Tessar optis, a crystal-clear 2.6-inch OLED QVGA screen, HSPA, GPS, WiFi, TV-out, compass, 8 GB of internal memory storage, and a microSD expansion slot. But, what the spec-sheet doesn't convey is the quality of finish and build that we see in the Nokia N86. The Nokia N86 resembles its slightly downrange sibling, the Nokia N85, with a dual-slider form-factor to slides up to reveal a keypad and down to reveal media controls (playback and whatnot). But, where the Nokia N85's slider mechanism tends to feel a little loose and wobbly at times, the Nokia N86's slider is rock solid and smooth. There's absolutely no jiggle, no wiggle, not even a hint of play in the sliding mechanism. And, then there's the tasteful metallic accents that highlight the handset's place as a high-end Nseries handset. Combine all that with a build quality that's unrivalled by any other handset (even from Nokia's own product portfolio), and you've got a seriously badass cameraphone. Nokia says that the 8-megapixel camera has been (and still is, as it undergoes continued refinement prior to launch) optimized to make the best use of the Carl Zeiss Tessar lens. Low-lighting conditions are no problem for the Nokia N86, as evidenced by a couple poster-sized night-shots that Nokia so proudly showed off at the press conference. The trick to making a great cameraphone isn't just about pixel density, but overall camera performance (light sensitivity, shot-to-shot time, shutter lag, etc.) and Nokia takes that philosophy to heart. Enjoy our Nokia N86 picture gallery and hands-on video! Related News from IntoMobile:

Microsoft scores LG's commitment for Windows Mobile Posted: 17 Feb 2009 02:29 AM PST LG and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) announced an expanded alliance to increase the number of Windows Mobile-powered LG phones. The agreement, which follows a memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies on November 3rd of last year, also involves formation of joint teams for research and development, to focus on creating phones built on tight integration between hardware and software. It also details joint marketing efforts to expand the reach of these phones at a range of prices in markets across the globe. Skype to Integrate with Nokia N97, Rest of N-Series to Come Posted: 17 Feb 2009 02:20 AM PST The VoIP service provider we all know and love, Skype, has joined hands in holy softwarimony with handset giant Nokia (NYSE: NOK), with apps preloaded on N97 models this third quarter. Awareness and instant messaging through Skype will be built right into the address book, and though starting only with the N97, should spread throughout the rest of the N series before the end of the year. Third party solutions like IM+ and Fring have been available on S60 for some time, but with a solid and official partnership, Skype and Nokia will be able to really tap into that VoIPing crowd who need to save on otherwise high-cost calls. On a related note, while swinging by the Skype booth at Mobile Focus last night, they mentioned that there's a new Xperia tile available. Way to hit up the big names there, Skype. Nokia enters the 8 megapixel race with N86 8MP Posted: 17 Feb 2009 01:49 AM PST Today at the press breakfast, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) unveiled its ticket for the ongoing 8 megapixel race. It's called the N86 8MP and it's a slider-shaped Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 smartphone. As you're about to see from the images bellow, the device looks quite sexy, but what images can't tell you is how it feels in the hand. In a word - perfect! I can go that far saying that the N86 8MP is probably the best-built Nokia device to date, feeling as solid as like it was made out of metal not plastic. Aside from boasting an 8 megapixel camera with wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens along with what they say is the 3rd generation of dual-LED flash - the N86 8MP also boasts a gorgeous 2.6-inch OLED QVGA screen with scratch resistant hardened glass, HSPA, GPS, WiFi, TV-out, compass, 8 GB of internal memory storage, microSD expansion slot. Like with any other NSeries device released in the near future, Ovi Suite comes pre-loaded with the device, allowing instant sharing of photos and videos. As for the release date and pricing, Nokia will begin shipping the N86 8MP in Q2 2009 for an estimated retail price of 375 EUR, before taxes and subsidies. Will and Simon took some real-life shots of the device, which are coming soon. In the meantime, check out official Nokia photos and the official release after the jump. PRESS RELEASE - When Nokia set out to make the best mobile imaging device, it combined wide-angle Carl Zeiss optics and an 8 megapixel sensor, resulting in performance comparable to a stand alone digital camera. The Nokia N86 8MP is designed to excel in both bright and low light conditions, and it's optimized for both video and still imaging. Its high-speed connectivity ensures easy and convenient sharing. The Nokia N86 8MP is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2009 with an estimated retail price of EUR 375, before taxes and subsidies. "People demand mobile cameras that take excellent pictures in all light conditions," says Juha-Pekka Sipponen, Director, Nokia Nseries. "That's why the aperture of the Nokia N86 8MP is comparable to that of a high-quality, stand-alone digital camera. Whether it's running with the bulls in Pamplona or capturing the panoramic beauty of a sunrise over Sydney, the Nokia N86 8MP will take brilliantly clear, wide-angle images that are instantly geotagged to be uploaded onto sites like Ovi Share or Flickr." Easy enough for a novice to use, the Nokia N86 8MP packs enough punch to impress an experienced photographer. This includes a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for panoramic pictures, shorter latencies and variable aperture for super sharp photos in challenging bright and low light conditions. The fast mechanical shutter ensures pictures with less motion blur while the dual LED camera flash is powerful enough for excellent photography and video capture. "When it comes to taking the best digital photos, it's the quality of the lens and the sensor that count, not just the quantity of pixels. The Nokia N86 8MP is the first mobile device with variable aperture, adding to the Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for excellent results. It has never been easier to capture special moments in such a great quality," says Helmut Heier of Carl Zeiss. Every detail of the metal-framed Nokia N86 8MP is thoughtfully designed with photography in mind, including 8 GB of internal memory for up to 4,000 images. Like any high-end digital camera, the memory can be increased with an exchangeable 16 GB microSD card. The device also offers a bright OLED screen with scratch resistant hardened glass, easy photo management, full sync capability with a PC and TV-out support for slide shows. Shipping with the latest version of Nokia Maps and full Ovi integration, the Nokia N86 8MP gives a personal dimension to photos and videos. People can share their location with personal content like geotagged photos. The Nokia N86 8MP comes with a built-in compass, along with an integrated 3-months license for full voice and pedestrian navigation so that happy snappers don't lose their way when capturing life through the camera lens. Multimedia features - music, games, video The Nokia N86 8MP, with its integrated kick stand, is ideal for watching videos and playing games. Each Nokia N86 8MP can play up to 25 hours of music on one charge which can be enjoyed with the Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-214 also announced today. People can build a personal music collection from the millions of tracks and playlists available from the Nokia Music Store, where available. Related News from IntoMobile:

LG Globus TU330 Set for Rogers Launch Posted: 16 Feb 2009 01:57 PM PST To go along with the LG Secret TU750 that I mentioned earlier in the day, looks like there's another device set to hit Rogers (NYSE: RCI) soon… The LG Globus TU330. While not heavy on the features, the Globus is a flip phone that packs a 1.3MP camera with video capabilities. There's GPS, stereo bluetooth… and the best part… The price. It will be only $19.99 on a 3-year contract. If you're looking for a simple device for everyday incoming and outgoing calls, with some simple apps on-board, it's worth a look. No details on when this device from LG will launch on Rogers, but like the Secret, expect it to pop up within a month or so. [Via: MobileSyrup Forums] Related News from IntoMobile:

Samsung Launches Slim, Sexy Touchscreen Slider: Ultra Touch Posted: 16 Feb 2009 09:01 AM PST The Samsung Ultra Touch was the last of three new handsets announced by Samsung today (the Blue Earth got an honourable mention). The S8300 is a classy little number with a slide-out keypad, full AMOLED WQVGA screen that clocks in at 2.8″ and 240 x 400 pixels. It's packing an 8 meagpixel camera (like just about every other new phone these days, it seems), with auto-focus, face detection and geotagging through its integrated GPS unit. The TouchWiz UI wasn't anything new, and based on the slide of the Blue Earth handset, we're presuming it will run the same. Other specs of the Samsung Ultra Touch include:

Samsung Launches two Beat Phones For DJs who Can't Afford Turntables Posted: 16 Feb 2009 08:59 AM PST Samsung's has two new additions to their Beat lineup for the musically-inclined: the DJ M7600 and Disc M6710. Both feature HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps, 2.6″ AMOLED WQVGA (240 x 400 (touchscreens), 3 megapixel cameras, and very cool disc-style user interfaces. The Beat DJ features a remixing application that lets you bust out some impromptu scratch routines, including lowpass, highpass, reverb, tempo, and lots of other changes to bring out your inner tunesmith. As spotted before the show, the DJ hosts some proper Bang and Olufsen speakers to share your sheer pimptitude with passersby. The Disc version's only difference seems to be subbing out GPS for a slide-out keypad, and skipping the advanced DJ software. A very cool idea, overall. Video to come! Related News from IntoMobile:
