Diamond Foods (DMND) board member Joseph Silveira apparently killed himself last week, CNBC reported, and Bloomberg is now raising questions about whether his death has anything to do with the probe into the company’s payments to walnut growers.
Silveira was on the audit committee at the snack company, at least as of 2009, Bloomberg notes, and he was the president of a farmland management company. The company is investigating payments made to walnut growers, an issue also recently brought up in a Barron’s story.
The company denied any connection between Silveira’s death and the investigation, telling Bloomberg “Any suggestion that his passing was somehow related to the accounting investigation by people seeking to profit by spreading such unfounded rumors is demeaning to his legacy.”
Diamond shares were recently down 16%.
