Russian search giant Yandex has found its Wonder app barred from searching on Facebook's social graph hours after its launch.
Yesterday Yandex launched Wonder, a search app that combines social network search to provide information on things you might like. However, three hours after Wonder was launched, Facebook reportedly pulled search access for the app from its social network.
While Yandex's Wonder app uses multiple social networks, check-in services and music streaming services, Facebook blocked it from searching its social graph, its most valuable commodity. Of course Facebook launched its own social graph searching tool earlier this week, which it hopes will be a boon to advertisers that want to mine Facebook users' data for their profit.
Facebook has been busy limiting third party access to its valuable data, with Twitter's video sharing system Vine also having its access to Facebook blocked less than a day after it launched.
It seems that while Facebook offers APIs to access parts of its data, software developers that it believes could have a chance to make money from its data will quickly get the boot, something that could put off smaller developers from working with Facebook's APIs.
Yandex provided this statement about the situation:
Wonder app has been blocked by Facebook. We are in touch with Facebook to enquire about the reasons for this and what can be done to solve this problem. As of now any new users trying to sign up to Wonder with their Facebook account receive a notification by Facebook: “An error occurred. Please try again later”. Those users who have already signed up can still ask questions, but the Facebook data will not be updated. Instagram, Foursquare and Twitter data are updated as normal.
