FedEx (FDX) wowed the market with its earnings and guidance yesterday. The results were so good, in fact, that the folks at RBC Capital Markets upgraded FedEx’s shares to Buy all the way from Underperform.

    Getty Images

RBC’s John Barnes and team list three reasons for the upgrade:

    1. Based on management tone over the past few months, we believe FedEx will be successful in re-engineering its profit improvement plan to extract a greater level of costs from the network. This change in strategy gives us greater confidence in the company ability to deliver the bulk of its profit improvement targets and ultimately significant earnings growth over a multi-year timeframe.

    2. While the growth from Ground and Freight pales in comparison to the expected increase in Express operating income, it is important to note that both divisions appear to be on solid footing.

    3. The expected profit improvement at Express combined with steady growth from Ground and Freight should drive a significant improvement in FedEx’s free cash flow profile. Based on management tone and reinforced by recent activity, we expect FedEx to materially increase the return of capital to shareholders through both share buybacks and dividend increases.

Wunderlich’s Nicholas Bender thinks FedEx’s results bode well for Old Dominion (ODFL), Con-way (CNW) and Saia (SAIA):

We expect all less-than-truckload carriers to benefit in 2Q14 from the same trends that carried FedEx Freight to a banner 4Q14. This includes Hold-rated Old Dominion, which will continue to grow at well above market rates, and Buy-rated Con-way, which we believe can leverage a strong 2Q14 to prime the pump on margin enhancement efforts. Our favorite name in the space remains Saia (SAIA-$42.92, Buy), which will once again see accelerating tonnage growth in 2Q14. Though tonnage growth will moderate in 2H14 due to steeper comps, there remains considerable po

As a convenience store, it doesn’t have direct competition fromDollar Tree (DLTR) or Family Dollar (FDO) because these dollar stores aren exclusively focused on food (and they have no gasoline or cigarette sales), and theye targeted at the folks who are trying to save money over convenience, not vice versa. The convenience angle is another reason whyWalmart (WMT) and Costco (COST)aren’t competitors, since those behemoths are about a total shopping experience.

Midcap Energy Stocks To Buy #5: Ultra Petroleum (UPL)

What a difference a few years can make. After getting killed by low natural gas prices, Ultra Petroleum (UPL) has bounced back with a vengeance. Yet more good times could be in store for the midcap energy stock.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Companies that are drilling for gas are doing so within the confines of cash flow instead of the previous aggressive pursuit of production growth. For example, Ultra Petroleum (NYSE: UPL  ) has reduced its capital expenses so that the company is investing within its cash flow. That's had a dramatic effect on its capital budget which has gone from $1.56 billion in 2011 to just $415 million this year.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Ultra Petroleum (UPL) is an oil and natural gas company engaged in the acquisition, exploration, development and production of oil and natural gas properties. This stock closed up 1.8% at $22.36 in Friday's trading session.

    Friday's Volume: 10.05 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 3.19 million

    Volume % Change: 300%

Shares of UPL spiked up a bit on Friday after the company said it moved to a profit for its second quarter on improved revenue and the absence of major ceiling test writedowns. The company reported net income of $116.4 million, or 75 cents per share, vs. a loss of $1.19 billion, or $7.76 per share, for the same period last year.

From a technical perspective, UPL jumped higher here right above its 200-day moving average of $20.32 and back above its 50-day moving average of $21.48 with monster upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of UPL within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if UPL manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $21.96 to $22.47 with high volume. At last check, UPL closed near its intraday high of $22.50 and volume was well above its three-month average action.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in UPL as long as it's trending above its 50-day $21.48 or its 200-day at $20.32 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 3.19 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then UPL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $24.52. Any high-volume move above that level will then put $26 to $27.60, or even $30 into range for shares of UPL.
