Ever wanted to find really random sites or articles, but when you search in Google all you get are results from the most popular websites? Meet Million Short, a new search engine that lets you purge up to 1 million of the web's most prominent sites to provide users with non-relevant search results to give you something new and interesting.
How does it work? As the Million Shorts website explains:
"Million Short is an experimental web search engine (really, more of a discovery engine) that allows you to REMOVE the top million (or top 100k, 10k, 1k, 100) sites from the results set. We thought might be somewhat interesting to see what we'd find if we just removed an entire slice of the web."
Interesting concept. But I wanted to see how it worked and took it for a test drive. To start, I did a search for my name "John Rampton":
The search results were a little surprising. No Facebook, Google+, or other accounts that Google typically returns on searches for my name. These are the results that are typically buried on the deepest pages of search engines like Google and Bing.
Interestingly, a website I built back in 2002 is one of the top 5 results. Google buried this site a long time ago. It's not really important but cool to see that at least one search engine finds it useful enough to rank on Page 1!
Something else fun to see is "The Other" John Rampton that steals my vanity URLs on places like Twitter is the No. 6 result in the unimportant results! Gave me a good laugh.
Some other interesting search results:
Google: The first result is "Google.au".Twitter: The No. 1 result is "tweeternet.com". Even worse than all the above mentioned.Search Engine Watch: The top result is "b2bsearchenginewatch.com".While Million Short isn't a search engine you'll likely use as your go-to source for information that actually provides the answers or information you want or need, but more as a fun place to discover interesting and obscure search results that you typically won't find elsewhere. Hope you enjoy!
