Top Beverage Stocks To Buy Right Now

It was a good week to be tending the bar. SodaStream (NASDAQ: SODA  ) and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ: GMCR  ) moved higher -- up 9% and a whopping 33%, respectively -- after posting blowout quarterly results.

Remember when SodaStream's carbonated-beverage machine was supposed to be a novelty? Remember when last year's end of Green Mountain's K-Cup patents was supposed to be the end of the company's growth?

Well, shares of SodaStream and Green Mountain hit fresh 52-week highs on Friday.

SodaStream's revenue climbed 34% to $117.6 million, and profitability rose 20% to $12.1 million or $0.57 a share. Wall Street was settling for earnings of $0.54 a share on just $113.1 million in revenue.

Net sales at Green Mountain rose 14% to top $1 billion. That was shy of analyst targets, but all was forgiven when adjusted net income soared 45% to $0.93 a share. The pros were betting on $0.73 a share out of the java jobber.

The two companies are often lumped together because they're championing the movements of quality self-made beverages, but they don't move in lockstep.

Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised. Earlier this year rival Beam (NYSE: BEAM  ) created a stir when it announced its intention to water down its popular Maker's Mark brand in a bid to stretch supply to meet demand. While it may have been something of a marketing ploy -- it quickly backed down when a hubbub grew on its Facebook page and subsequently enjoyed a nice 44% spike in sales -- it did indicate there was growing interest in the category.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Riddhi Kharkia] chose stop at an asset swap and a 16.7% stake (as per reports).

    Not all the way, why?

As per Coca Cola management, the company chose caution while proceeding with the Monster deal in order to protect its brand image from a company that urges consumers to nleash the beastwith products like Assault and Khaos. The maker of famous products Coca-Cola, Sprite and Fanta is already wrestling with attacks from politicians who blame sugary sodas for obesity and diabetes and hence, it wants to keep at arm's length from the more serious public relations battles facing the energy drinks industry, including an FDA probe over deaths possibly linked to Monster.

Now, even though Coca Cola did not go ahead with a full acquisition, there are going to be reasonable implications of this deal. Monster sold $3.1 billion in energy drinks in 2013 in the US, versus $3.4 billion for Red Bull. Monster's energy drink sales are rapidly rising in the US. Monster will likely be the number one energy brand in the US by 2014 or 2015. Thus, alignment of Coca Cola energy drink brands including NOS and Full Throttle with the Monster existing portfolio will create an explosive business that will accelerate at considerable speed. Monster already has an established competency in selling energy drinks as evidenced by its sales numbers and the company might likely be able to position the NOS and Full Throttle brands for faster growth domestically than Coca-Cola has been able.

    The synergy

On the other hand, Coca Cola will also benefit from inclusion of Monster non-energy drinks including Hansen Natural Sodas and Peace Tea. In the second quarter of 2014, increased prices for the Peace Tea line helped Monster in springing an earnings surprise. Net sales of Peace Tea for the second quarter were higher than in the comparable period in 2013. The Peace Tea brand was the 10th largest ready to drink tea brand in the US by 2013 revenue and even though Coc

Monster has strong margins, quality debt management, consistently improving revenue and earnings on an annual basis, and huge international potential. SABMiller (NASDAQOTH: SBMRF  ) , parent to the Miller Brewing Company, claims a more modestly massive share of the U.S. beer market. MillerCoors, a joint venture with the Molson Coors Brewing Company (NYSE: TAP  ) , controls 29% of the domestic market, with Miller accounting for 17% of that share. In 2012, MillerCoors' "premium lights," Coors Light and Miller Lite, held down 8.7% and 6.9% of the domestic beer market, respectively, to round out the top five brands.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Many mass-produced beer companies, such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) , have struggled in domestic markets since the recession as consumers have opted for even cheaper beers, or have decided to pay a premium for craft beers and made the move toward Boston Beer or other small craft brewers. In 2010, for example, sales of Budweiser dropped 7.3% while Miller High Life saw sales dip 4%. This same year saw Sam Adams tack on a gain of 1.7%! This doesn't even take into account the fact that domestic competition has spiked, with the number of brewers in the U.S. jumping from just 89 in the late 1970s to more than 2,400 by the end of 2012, according to the Brewers Association.

Zero waste is not only possible for Wal-Mart, but many other companies in other industries as well. MillerCoors -- the MolsonCoors (NYSE: TAP  ) and SABMiller joint venture -- has four U.S. breweries that are now landfill-free, meaning the company sends zero waste to landfills. It's flagship Golden, Colo., brewery used to send 135 tons of garbage to a landfill every month, but no more!

The other one was Molson Coors Brewing (TAP).

Oh yeah, again, theye really cheap. Theye the oldest brewer in North America, and the stock is running about 10-11 times earnings with a very strong balance sheet. If you look at what Heineken is bidding for Asia Pacific Breweries (15-17 times cash flow), Molson looks like a bargain. The company has been innovative in coming out with new products, especially in the craft beer area. Their customer base is mostly unemployed, so that kind of the problem. But usually if we can buy a beverage company at 10x earnings, wee pretty patient. Historically it been a pretty good entry point.
